Lisa Crawley Releases Moody New Single and Video “Hey You”
Los Angeles-based, New Zealand-raised artist Lisa Crawley has unveiled her latest single and video, “Hey You,” a track that masterfully blends moody, sultry melodies with playful 1960s doo-wop influences. Released today, this introspective piece showcases Crawley‘s exceptional songwriting skills as she weaves hook-laden choruses with thoughtful, emotive verses.
“‘Hey You’ is about investigating the layers and complexities we have as humans, trying to understand them more,” Lisa Crawley explains. “It’s coming to the conclusion there are certain feelings and emotions we have that we may never be able to pinpoint, but are certainly there. It explores a sense of loneliness that can be hard to define – the type you can feel even when in the company of others.”
The track, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Grammy-nominated collaborator Rob Kleiner (Tub Ring, David Gueta) in Los Angeles, leans sonically into the retro music world. What began as a simple voice note with numerous verses evolved into a rich, layered composition. “I’ve been playing it live both solo and with a band, and when it’s the solo version it ends up sounding like it’s something in a Western saloon!” Crawley shares. The instrumentation, primarily handled by Crawley and Kleiner, features a contribution from Crawley’s cousin Mark Perkins, who remotely added the acoustic guitar from New Zealand.
Accompanying the single is a music video directed, shot, and edited by Will Cook (American Mile, Witkin) in Los Angeles. Inspired by 90s music videos, the visuals were filmed at the iconic Hollywood lounge, famous for its appearances in the TV series “Mad Men” and the movie “Swingers.” The video conceptually mirrors the song’s meaning, illustrating how someone can appear to be enjoying themselves while struggling internally. “The video captures the essence of the song; of feeling lonely, despite what may seem as someone to be living their best life,” says Crawley. “To me, the struggling artist in the video could represent anyone who’s struggling to find the meaning and purpose to what they’re doing.”

“Hey You” follows Crawley’s recent 60s-inspired indie folk track “Boy Don’t Cry,” which received airplay on KCRW’s Eclectic 24 and was produced by Crawley herself. With this new single offering a glimpse into her forthcoming EP, fans can expect more dark pop collaborations with Rob Kleiner and a focus on piano-based songs that Crawley has been working on for some time. “I’m very excited to share that later on this year,” she reveals.
