Yasmin Hass Drops Debut Single “Cleo,” Produced By The 1975’s Ross MacDonald

London-based singer-songwriter Yasmin Hass has unveiled her debut single “Cleo,” offering a deep reflection on love, freedom, and the essence of young womanhood. The track marks the first release from her upcoming debut EP, Worst of Me, which is set for release on November 28th, 2023.

Released under the newly-minted label, Cool Online, “Cleo” is the brainchild of a collaboration between Ross MacDonald of The 1975 and renowned producer Ed Thomas, who boasts credits with artists like Jorja Smith, Stormzy, and Maisie Peters. The EP marks the first in a series of three releases planned under this collaboration.

Diving deep into the inspiration behind the song, Hass reflects on the experiences of her friend Cleo, who chose to embark on a fresh start abroad. Yasmin articulates, “This song is about being utterly in love, whilst also wondering, how much freedom do I have left? It touches on the thrill of the unknown and the sudden urge to break away from what feels comfortable and safe.”

Born in Melbourne and brought up in London, Hass’s eclectic background intertwines soul and reggae from her Jamaican heritage, with strong familial ties to the music world as her aunt is an acclaimed soul singer while her uncle was Bob Marley’s tour manager. Hass proudly carries Arawak Indian and Sephardic ancestry.

With her recent performance at this year’s Wilderness Festival, Hass draws inspiration from the influential women in her life. She expresses, “I am a product of many different cultures and backgrounds, led by women who let creativity lead them, and who have inspired me to do the same.”

Contrary to the apparent somber note of the EP title, Yasmin embraces the idea of vulnerability in art. She believes in the power of shedding light on personal imperfections, stating, “There’s a strength in that – in the imperfections. They’re what I find most interesting.’’
