Zooey Celeste Debuts Single “Cosmic Being,” Announces LA Shows

Southern Californian singer-songwriter, Zooey Celeste, has unveiled a new single, “Cosmic Being,” from his forthcoming debut album, Restless Thoughts, set for release on November 3rd, 2023, under ATO Records. Additionally, Celeste announces two upcoming Los Angeles performances at Bardot-Hollywood and Genghis Cohen on October 23rd and November 10th, respectively.

“Cosmic Being,” produced by acclaimed producer and longtime friend, Nick Hakim (Lianne La Havas, Lil Yachty), embodies the intricate and ethereal soundscapes found throughout the album, particularly accentuated in the lead single, “Restless Thoughts.” Zooey Celeste elaborated on the single’s inception, stating, “It lived as a voice memo for years and then I brought it to Nick, it became another example of his taking something very small and intimate and giving it this huge amphitheater sound.”

This single is not merely a musical piece; it represents a breakthrough in Celeste’s songwriting, achieving a unique balance between sincerity and idiosyncratic expression. “That song felt like the beginning of moving toward writing lyrics that are earnest and inspiring but still hit hard,” Celeste comments. “I’m more interested in writing something positive in a way that’s completely genuine and feels really good to listen to.”

The album, Restless Thoughts, is described as the real-life manifestation of its creator’s alter ego, symbolizing an astral shaman guiding the departed souls. The album features a diverse range of guest musicians including Jake Portrait, Abe Rounds, and Tei Shi, blending avant-punk, chamber-pop, and lo-fi psychedelia.

In conjunction with the release of Restless Thoughts, Celeste aims to inspire listeners to explore beyond the conventional and delve deep into self-exploration and creativity. “Making this record showed me that if I’m not going beyond what the world has handed me as options, then I’m not being creative,” he reflects.
