Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy Celebrate R.E.M.’s “Murmur” With 2024 Tour

Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy are set to embark on a tour in February 2024, marking the celebration of R.E.M.‘s influential 1983 debut album, Murmur. The tour, comprising performances in several US cities, will see them playing the iconic album in its entirety, along with other early hits from R.E.M.

Shannon, an acclaimed actor/musician, and Narducy, known for his contributions to the Bob Mould Band and Superchunk, have a decade-long history of collaborative performances. Their musical renditions encompass albums from renowned artists like Neil Young, The Smiths, and Bob Dylan. Their initial performance of Murmur in July 2023, intended to be a singular tribute for the album’s 40th anniversary, received an overwhelming response, leading to the conception of this tour.

Reflecting on his long-standing admiration for R.E.M., Shannon said, “I have been a fan of R.E.M. since my cousin played me the ‘Document’ cassette out at my Aunt Norma’s trailer. I spent days and hours stumbling around my hometown of Lexington, KY listening to ‘Murmur’ on my Walkman, long before the notion of being anything other than completely anonymous was a viable option. Jason and I have done several other albums and shows together but this one means the most to me.”

Narducy, expressing his excitement about the forthcoming tour, said, “I’m looking forward to going on the road with Michael and the band. Michael and I have been doing shows for a long time but this is our first proper tour. The energy in the room at our ‘Murmur’ show at Metro last July was really special. It’s fun celebrating a record that is so beloved.”

Murmur, four decades post its release, retains its stature as a groundbreaking debut album. It was heralded as “an intelligent, enigmatic, deeply involving album” by Rolling Stone, earning the title of the Best Album of 1983, and also secured its place in the magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Pitchfork’s Stephen M. Deusner acknowledged the album’s distinctive and innovative blending of influences, labeling it as a “sharp reimagining of rock tropes.”
