Hayley Williams, Brittany Howard, and Julien Baker Protest Nashville Drag Ban With Love Rising Benefit Concert
Several renowned musicians have confirmed their participation in Nashville’s Love Rising concert in response to Tennessee’s recent ban on drag performances on public property. Among the headliners are Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Brittany Howard, Julien Baker, and Maren Morris, along with Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Brothers Osborne, Yola, Allison Russell, and others.
The concert will take place on March 20th, 2023, with all proceeds going to support LGBTQIA+ programs, services, and resources across Tennessee. The event organizers have partnered with non-profits such as Tennessee Equality Project, Inclusion Tennessee, OUTMemphis, and the Tennessee Pride Chamber in Partnership With Looking Out Foundation.
Allison Russell, a queer and intersectional artist and mother, expressed her support for the advocacy organizations that promote equality for all Tennesseans. She stated, “LGBTQIA+ contributions and creativity are foundational to every genre of modern song and arts performance. I think it speaks volumes that so many in our community are feeling the same call to support, celebrate and uplift!”
On March 2nd, 2023, Republican Governor Bill Lee signed a bill into law that effectively bans “adult cabaret performances” on public property and in front of children in Tennessee. The new law, which will go into effect on April 1st, 2023, risks felony charges for repeat offenders.
The Love Rising concert is a response to this ban, with the aim of supporting and celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community in Tennessee. Tickets are currently available for purchase here.
