Fenne Lily Shares New Single, “In My Own Time”,

Fenne Lily has released her new single and video, “In My Own Time,” from her upcoming album Big Picture, which is set to release on April 14th under Dead Oceans.

“In My Own Time” is one of the album’s more tender moments, exploring the introspective theme of secluded intimacy with a fear that life is moving too quickly. Fenne reflects on her conflicted feelings about living a smaller, slower life, accompanied by Katy Kirby‘s harmonies and lush guitar lines.

Fenne explains that the song was a product of her picking away at a guitar lick she couldn’t find a place for over the summer. She worked on it from journal entries on her flat’s roof, singing whatever words felt the least embarrassing to verbalize. The song’s first demo, which was recorded with her band, sounds similar to the final version. Fenne’s drummer, James Luxton, created percussion from items in her kitchen like herb jar shakers, spatulas on a notebook, and finger tapping on a pan. This homemade percussion was later added to the final version alongside the real drums.

Fenne directed the accompanying music video for “In My Own Time” with Jim Larson (Alex Cameron, Mac DeMarco). The video shows Fenne and her band performing in a raucous bar and interacting with various patrons and ventriloquist doppelgangers. Fenne’s roommate, Zander Sharp, and she came up with the idea for the video while cooking risotto over a bottle of wine. The duo planned to create a cinematic and borderline violent visual companion to a love song, which Fenne believes reflects the twisted aspects of love amidst chaos and the feeling of being inanimate in one’s story. Fenne elaborates, “All that, in the style of Terminator 2.”

Fenne’s Big Picture is a beautiful representation of her past two years, recorded live at co-producer Brad Cook’s North Carolina studio (Whitney, Suki Waterhouse). Throughout the album, Fenne reflects on the different phases of love, exploring the concepts of comfort versus claustrophobia. Fenne comments, “These songs explore worry and doubt and letting go, but those themes are framed brightly.” She also explains that writing the album was her way of bringing order to the chaos that was 2020 by documenting the most vulnerable parts of that time, feeling like she regained a sense of autonomy through the process.

Finally, Fenne explains that the album’s cover art, constructed by artist Thomas Doyle on a miniature scale, shows a collapsed home confined within a bell jar, featuring several inch-high models of Fenne in different places. This physical representation of a self-contained disaster serves as a reminder that we are small in the grand scheme of things, which is a relief for Fenne. “We only really know the one world we find ourselves in at any given time,” she says. “It’s only when that world changes or collapses that we realize there are other narratives available — that we’ve known only one of many possible ways to exist.”
