Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2023 Nominees Announced

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its list of nominees for induction in 2023. This year’s roster includes a blend of established artists from the 1980s and 1990s, including Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Joy Division/New Order, and more.

Kate Bush tops the list, known for her impact on avant-garde performance, writing, and musicianship. She has collaborated with several artists including David Gilmour and Peter Gabriel, but recently gained renewed popularity with “Running Up That Hill” appearing in the Netflix series “Stranger Things“.

Eight artists are nominated for induction for the first time, including Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, and Warren Zevon. The list also features well-known artists such as Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, and The White Stripes. The White Stripes and Missy Elliott are eligible for induction as their first commercial recording is at least 25 years old.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has been a source of controversy over the years, with criticism over both the inclusion and exclusion of certain artists. Joe Cocker is one notable example of an artist who has not been inducted despite a petition delivered by Billy Joel. Additionally, the Hall has faced criticism for including non-rock artists and excluding many progressive and art-rock bands.

Despite these criticisms, the 2023 induction roster features two influential late-20th century and early 21st-century artists, Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden, as well as the inclusion of Warren Zevon, who is widely regarded as an influential artist despite not having a large number of hit songs.
