Kelela Covers Sade’s “Like A Tattoo” For Black History Month

R&B singer Kelela has released a cover of Sade‘s classic single “Like A Tattoo” as part of Amazon Music’s US Black History Month campaign. The neo-soul band’s 1992 track from their fourth album, Love Deluxe, has been given a stripped-back piano rendition by Kelela for her second time covering the song.

In a statement, the artist expressed her love for the original track, calling it one of her “favourite songs ever written.” Kelela had previously performed “Like a Tattoo” in 2017 for BBC Radio 1’s Piano Sessions.

“I started rinsing it when I was in high school and it’s been a template for intimate music in my life ever since,” Kelela said of the song. “I love songs that aren’t self-focused, and in this one, she empathizes with a stranger in deep regret. A confessional masterpiece. I only hope I can do it justice.”

Kelela’s new version replaces the original guitar-led instrumental with a more stripped-down piano accompaniment, showcasing the singer’s smooth vocals against the delicate keys. The cover serves as a fitting finale to Amazon Music’s US Black History Month campaign, which aims to celebrate and highlight the contributions of Black artists throughout history.
