Amtrac: Extra Time – “a Cinematic Showcase Of Musical Talent”
4.0 out of 5.0 starsAmtrac’s latest album, Extra Time, is a sonic journey through vintage synth sounds and modern electronic music.
The eleven-track album showcases Amtrac’s impressive ability to craft layered and dynamic tracks, demonstrating his maturity as a producer and songwriter. Produced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Extra Time is an impressive collection of songs that are both introspective and uplifting.
Opening with “Heard Me Right,” Amtrac sets the tone for the album with an infectious mix of rhythmic bass lines and atmospheric melodies. The track is a perfect introduction to the world of Extra Time and sets the stage for what’s to come. Moving onto “Domino,” featuring Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands, Amtrac continues to blend vintage synths with modern electronic beats. Herring’s vocals add an extra layer of depth to the track, making it a standout on the album.
One of the album’s most striking tracks is “Hesitation,” featuring Naeem. The jazzy and suspended-in-time groove is the perfect backdrop for Naeem’s emotive vocals. Amtrac’s production is particularly impressive here, as he weaves together multiple layers of synths and beats to create a lush soundscape that perfectly complements the vocals.
As the album progresses, Amtrac continues to impress with his unique blend of genre-fusion electronic. “Mode / Scanner” sees him mirror a live environment, with “Mode” showcasing his melodic breakdowns and charismatic build-ups, while “Scanner” borders on techno with its repetitive synth-induced drum beat.
“Nobody Else,” featuring a sample of Four Tops‘ 1965 R&B classic “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch),” is another highlight. The track is laden with body-moving drums and sultry guitar solos, making it a perfect addition to any dance floor, and a clear homage to his Motown influences.
