Horsegirl is a rising three-piece band from Chicago, made up of Penelope Lowenstein on guitar and vocals, Nora Cheng on guitar and vocals, and Gigi Reece on drums. The band was formed in 2019 and draws inspiration from Sonic Youth and the shoegaze scene of the late 80s and early 90s.
The band quickly made a name for themselves in the Chicago music scene and caught the attention of record label Matador, who signed them in 2020. Horsegirl has since performed at major music festivals, such as SXSW, and has received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike.
Horsegirl’s music is a refreshing take on alternative rock, incorporating elements of shoegaze, and dream pop to create a captivating soundscape. The trio focus on creating an immersive experience for any listener, while their lyrics are thought-provoking and often leave much to interpretation, giving their music an added layer of depth.
In 2022, the band released their debut album, Versions of Modern Performance, which garnered significant critical praise from the likes of Under The Radar, Mojo, NME, The Guardian, and more. The record was produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) and mastered by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone (The War On Drugs, The National).
